I like both your suggestions. It would be impressive if done at night and the satellite could photograph that.

The UNPLUG America - Give Mother Earth a Rest Day (October 13) was first held in 1992. I don't know how successful it has been since.

I think engineers and specialists should emphasize to all these people that in fact by turning off the light we don't really save anything; the power plants are still running and shutting them down and restart would mean much more waste than running the lights; and power itself as it is cannot be stored during the hour(s), therefore we don't have any gain here either. What savings are we talking about? Let's don't be stupid! If we overall and consistently start saving energy, that is a different story because then we can shut down power plants for good. But until then everything is futile.

I'm glad to see a grass-roots movement like this and I like the idea.
However I would like to suggest to go one step further.
* Blow the main power breaker on your breaker panel for one hour instead. *
This would have a greater impact than just simply turning out the lights.

As a side effect this could also enable us to start thinking about emergency back-up power as well alternative green power.
