WordPress.com doesn’t have the best internal search engine, but I’m usually good about using the tags correctly. If you want to know more about Alaska and Alaska Natives, including Eskimo people, especially Yup’ik people of the Yukon Kuskokwim Nushagak region, try using the categories in the sidebar or the site search tags at the bottom of each post.

The Nushagak River is in the Bristol Bay region (Dillingham is the hub. The link opens in a new window) from which Todd Palin’s family comes.

revised 2008-08-31 Because Gov. Palin has offered her credentials as commander of the National Guard, here is the category for related posts here– Eskimo Guard For those who have read several news stories quoting the Alaska Business Journal Monthly story, March 2007 (? looking for the original article), the end of 2006, on the Governor’s response to the Iraq surge, may be interested in this post, What impact will Iraq war call-up have from June 2006. State governors don’t usually have much involvement in US wars, and naturally would be more interested in state affairs. But this US war has called up our National Guardsmen.

“Alaska is on the map” is the recent slogan. Actually, Alaska has always been on the map. In fact, all over the map and maps. Click the category maps to find out where all we’ve been put now.

The Bathtub scoured this up from Andrew Sullivan’s blog. The overall characterization from a Wasilla neighbor generally fits with my understanding from way out here.

I’m trying to find a central source of Michael Carey’s coverage. In the meantime I founds this–

    The View From Alaska

“As governor, Palin has been unable to separate her personal life from her professional life. Her attempt to have her former brother-in-law Trooper Wooten fired is now the subject of an investigation. On Tuesday, the Washington Post published a story with yet another example of her failure to establish boundaries between personal and professional matters. She insisted on using her home in Wasilla, not the governor’s mansion in Juneau, as her primary residence and, as a result, billed the state for the cost of more than 300 nights at home. She also had the state pay for her family’s travel.

The story suggests something else, something that has gone unstated but is disturbing nonetheless. Sarah Palin, apparently, did not sit down with bureaucrats or lawyers to determine the proper way to handle expenses for the time she was living at home and the time her family spends traveling.

Is Sarah Palin smart enough to be president? The Constitution does not mandate an IQ test. Nor does it prescribe how much experience in international affairs and domestic policy a candidate must have. Critics have been quick to demand: “What does she know about the world?” But an equally important question is: “What does she know about her own country?”

For most of Sarah Palin’s adult life, she has been what she says she is: a suburban mom. Now she is a candidate for vice president of the United States.

Michael Carey is a columnist for the Anchorage Daily News and the host of “Anchorage Edition,” a public affairs program broadcast throughout the state by Alaska Public Television, Inc.

  • Ptarmigan hunting
Ive always considered myself to be more of a stream outdoorsman, but living in Alaska you are given so many opportunities to play in the field as well. I recently, last weekend, took up one such opportunity and borrowed the schools snow machine and joined Mr. Smith (6th grade teacher) on a x-tundra adventure to hunt some ptarmigan. Ptarmigan are kind of like […]
  • Summer Adventures
Well, the summer is coming to a close, so I guess I owe you a summary of my adventures. After the trip to Denali with Erin, I returned to hot and humid east coast, Taylor's Landing, Maryland and spent much of the summer fishing on the Potomac river with my Dad and uncle. The river has only gotten better over the years, so fishing was pretty good and w […]

This year has been challenging and rewarding in many ways already. I've been trying to get my feet under me in the classroom. Each new batch of 7th graders that get thrown my way try to test their new teacher by driving them crazy. This years group is trying hard, but they aren't getting anywhere. Tough love! There is always so much work to ge […]

Dirk and Erins Denali Adventure began on the 25th of May with our arrival in Anchorage. After securing our rental car we were on our way! Erins friends, Miranda and Brody opened their house to us and we spent the night of the 25th running some errands and just chilling out in Anchortown for the night. We met Erins roommate Christina and her friend Richard fo […]
  • Getting to the "Hinter" of "Hinterlands"
This past weekend, I made arrangements with my friend Kale, to visit him and some other friends at their current residence in Mekoryuk on Nunuvak Island. Then came the unpredictable adventure of making reservations to fly there. It isnt far, just a short 20 min. hop across the Etolin strait. There are only approximately 170 people that live on the island, […]
