Thanks. I was wondering if it weren't a "sunchoke" or Jerusalem artichoke (which are really not artichokes). I guess I've never seen an artichoke growing unfettered by short growing days.

I did notice, however, that suddenly one morning, all the plants had walked off.

The plant is an artichoke. Lots of them grow along the north coast of California especially along the Santa Cruz to San Francisco costal farming areas.
They are a type of thistle.

Alicia--

Don’t forget that ringworm is a microscopic fungus, not an actual animal. Like athlete’s foot, bits of the fungus can be transferred to your fingers which then can be spread to another spot. However, the fungus needs a hospitable environment in which to grow. So, a simple touch once is unlikely to spread the fungus– skin is a very difficult physical barrier to break through.

Simply standing in a house with ringworm won’t infect anything, but continual exposure (living or working in a contaminated room) means it is far more likely you will keep contacting the fungus and that the fungus can find a nice warm, moist area on you to grow.

Therefore, wash (and dry) your hands. Follow the other recommendations for reducing the presence of ringworm fungus.

The aurora link has a discussion about how to interpret the daily activity into a longer term forecast-- That might be a better site for you to bookmark. They also have ways to display differing maps of aurora activity, that is, where the aurora occurs over North America, which might help you plan the races more precisely. You can always come back here to get to those links.

You could always just come back to this post. The alerts here are real time indicators and update automatically. The aurora map is an indicator of activity. I'll double-check to see how many days the indicator covers.

If you click through the link above, http://www.n3kl.org/, you will get to the web page, http://www.n3kl.org/sun/noaa.html

They have a lot of interesting links there and instructions for adding the alert, http://www.n3kl.org/sun/status.html, to your blog.

If you don't have a website or blog, you should be able to add a widget or gadget to your PC desktop that contains the same code that will display the information. Alternatively, if you use a home page or portal, such as Google or Yahoo, you should be able to add the code to that, much as you can add weather updates, etc.

I'm not too familiar with gadgets/widgets.

I've always had problems with the names, too. We have so few roads that "the road to Tok" from Fairbanks, or the "road to Fairbanks" from Tok makes more sense to me. Of course, in Bethel, simply "the road" works, too.

I like this map because it is so hard to explain to people Outside that we do not use route numbers, but have names for all of our highways. Alaskans do not call the Parks Highway, route #3.

Then there is the problem that some route numbers are not clearly correlated with a single highway. For example, Route #1 is Tok Cutoff, Glenn Highway, Seward Highway, and Sterling Highway, running from Tok to Homer and Route #2 is Alaska Highway, Richardson Highway, Steese Highway, and Elliott Highway, running from the border to Manley Hot Springs.

Give me a name, not a number, any day.

Push is on to memorialize Alaska Territorial Guard
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner - Fairbanks,AK,USA
By Christopher Eshleman FAIRBANKS — Roughly 6500 guardsmen started what would become a five-year watch over thousands of miles of Alaska's western coastline ... only a few hundred guard members are alive, Native Veterans Association directors said. So the association is looking to preserve history by placing a handful of life-sized statues in cities and villages around the state and by distributing dozens of smaller, table-top replicas.

FAIRBANKS -- The number of king salmon that reach the Canadian border might not satisfy a treaty agreement between Alaska and Canada despite massive cuts in subsistence fishing up and down the Yukon River in Alaska.

<blockquote>By December the flu was all but gone; it seemed the rate of illness was truly in decline. Many towns lifted their quarantines.

During World War I, the Spanish flu had rocked the world and, though Wickenburg was remote, it was still affected. The Miller family did not escape. William's young wife Anna contracted the disease and died.

From the Prescott Journal Miner:

"From Wickenburg comes news which will occasion universal sorrow in this community, the death of Mrs. Anna Miller being announced as occurring there on Dec. 23, from influenza pneumonia. She will be remembered as a resident of this city for many years. She was the wife of William Miller, an engineer of S.F.P.&P., who until a short time ago was assigned to this division of the road. To add more sorrow to this home, Mr. Miller is ill with this affliction, while the nurse also has been stricken, two small baby girls are left motherless, and the once happy home is clouded by that sorrow which is inconsolable. Mrs. Miller enjoyed a large acquaintance in this section, having also many friends who will regret that one so young and of such a pleasing personality should be called away. The funeral was held at Wickenburg on Dec. 24. The attendance was large, reflecting on the estimable character of the deceased."

My mother-in-law, Clara, was one of those little girls left motherless. The emptiness showed throughout their lives. William was left a widower with the two small girls. With Anna's bright light gone from the world, he left the railroad for awhile and spent a year or so working as a miner. But mining was not really his cup of tea, so he returned to the railroad. He remarried and had another daughter by his new wife, Mary. Memory of Anna faded, but her stunned family would never fully recover from the sorrow.

Hello! I found your site while I was doing some research on business continuity planning. I've been tasked in my office to draft its BCP. Thanks your article, I've got a better understanding of BCPs and Disaster Recovery Planning and I can hopefully, start on my draft.

Many thanks,

I have no way to estimate this. It depends on a variety of local factors (doctor salaries, hospital costs, etc.). Check out WebMD.com or even About.com for rough estimates. Another source to check would be your state's medical association.

Don't forget aftercare costs.

In making a decision, compare surgery with the alternative of "no action" and with the alternative of some other action (for example, no stents or medication, diet, and exercise only).

1) masks and respirators-- there is a method for making respirators out of T-shirts, I believe. It is referred to in one of my posts but I don't remember which at the moment. The paper masks would probably not disinfect well in the microwave because you need some carrier to get hot enough to kill the virus, i.e., a wet mask (water gets to boiling. But needs to be hot enough for long enough to kill virus). If you can soak them long enough in a bleach solution or similar, that might work but I think the respirator material wouldn't do well. And, there is no guarantee that the respirator is disinfected AND will still protect.

2) One can make hand sanitizer out of alcohol and glycerin. I have seen the recipe but for some reason never posted it. Maybe it isn't all that good a substitute? You would want a 60-70% alcohol solution. Depending on how much alcohol is in the rubbing alcohol, you would have to adjust the amount of non-active ingredients. Soap wouldn't work because that would leave a soap residue which would dry out the skin and break the protective skin barrier. Also, tastes bad.

3) Drinking sufficient, but not excessive, water is always good. It's hard for adults to drink too much water but young children or infants can get "water poisoning".

4) Don't know anything about Primateen. As to the jury-rigged ventilator, it reminds me of the frog dissection in high school wherein we got to inflate the lungs to see how they worked; over-inflated they burst.

The other issues are making sure a clean tube is inserted correctly through the nose into the lung (without perforating the lung or trachea); that oil from the pump doesn't enter the air being pumped; etc. Might be better to make an "oxygen" tent and not a ventilator.

My wife thinks I'm nuts , but I'll run it by you anyway.

On the assumption that if this Mexican swine flu takes off the way the 1918 one did, the hospital system will be overwhelmed and we'll have to be our own damn healthcare providers, here are some measures I've been toying with:

1. Masks. There will be a shortage and we'll have to find ways to get more bang out the ones we have. Can the N95 disposables be sanitized by popping them into a microwave? How about spraying them with bleach or lysol or something?

2. Hand sanitizers. In a pinch how about making one out of 1 part ordinary dish washing fluid to 9 parts rubbing alcohol?

3. Drinking lots of liquid = peeing frequently = washing your hands frequently = good idea. Thoughts?

4. In case of post-virus pneumonia. Primateem spray mist? Or--and I'm very proud of this one, so don't rain on my parade, OK?-- rig a ventilator out of an aquarium air pump?

<blockquote>This is what needs to be talked about - solutions! The stats are bad, so what can we do about it?... But imagine the impact of leadership at the local, state and national level giving these issues the thought and attention they deserve, not just hoping (meager) funding will do it - money isn't going to solve these problems, strategy and hard work is. </blockquote>

[Bethel] "The" Alaskan Experience

Well, I applied for a teacher position in April and I actually got it! So, I gathered all of my little belongings and headed to a place I've only seen on the Discovery Channel or "The Deadliest Catch." I thought I would be flying in a bush plane and flashes of "The Hatchet" kept popping up in my mind. So, here I am in Alaska, as a first grade teacher. I'm getting used to the town and to the wonderful people here.

<blockquote>Governor Palin recently named John Moller to be her rural adviser.

Moller, who is Aleut, is a former crab fisherman from Unalaska who brings a long career in fisheries management to the post, including experience with the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council and the Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association CDQ.

Moller said that he was hired last month – before the state hiring freeze began - and started the job Feb. 6. <strong>The news that the post had been filled came as a surprise to many because the governor’s office did not issue a press release or announcement that position had finally been filled.</strong></blockquote>

<blockquote>“The moral blame lies more closely to the person(s) who intentionally started this fire,” Devaney wrote in a decision on Jan. 29.

Kids playing with matches started the August 2006 fire beneath the Hooper Bay school, which is elevated on pilings, after they slipped through wood skirting surrounding the base of the school and lit grass and trash fires, according to news reports at the time.

After the school went up in flames and caused fuel tanks to explode, the blaze destroyed a chunk of the village, including the school, 14 homes, a grocery store, other buildings and property such as snowmachines.

Twenty-seven parties, including Wilma Bell, Larry and Diane Hale and Harvey Hill, sued the district last year.

They argued that the district hadn’t done enough to prevent children from sneaking beneath it; had not maintained the sprinkler system; built portable classrooms too close to fuel tanks and the elementary school; and knew children were sneaking under the school and starting fires.

Devaney granted a summary judgment — a decision made before a full trial — in favor of the district.

He ruled that the building was not “inherently dangerous” because of the lack of upkeep and other issues, and only became dangerous “because of the intentional acts of third parties” setting it on fire.

“ … LYSD did not create a tinderbox situation,” the judge wrote. “There are no allegations of code violations under the school; there are no allegations of oil or gas under the school; there are no allegations accelerants located nearby were used to start the fire.

“The fact that oil tanks blew up a few hours after the fire was discovered does not support a tinderbox theory. The fact that children were playing with matches under (the) school for years does not support a tinderbox theory.”</blockquote>

The fact that children were playing with matches under (the) school for years does not support a tinderbox theory.”

Unfortunately, there really isn't a region-wide organization with logistical ability. The regional non-profit has not been on top of anything (this is not a new problem.) The state's emergency response programs are not even set up for epidemics or annual flooding, much less chronic, systems issues.

You are certainly correct in inquiring about alternatives. Whether in this country or elsewhere, the logistics of delivery and storage and distribution of donated supplies is a critical impediment and even a hazard in crisis situations. For example, the hub village of Bethel (population about 5300 and about 150 air miles away, <a href="http://ykalaska.wordpress.com/2006/05/12/where-is-nearest-hospital-as-one-flies/" rel="nofollow">Where is… nearest hospital (as one flies)</a>, has no emergency shelter at all and no place to store quantities of foodstuffs or fuel.

Samaritan's Purse http://www.samaritanspurse.org/ is a charity with an established relationship with some of the Wade Hampton Villages. (<a href="http://ykalaska.wordpress.com/2006/08/03/disasters-come-in-all-forms/" rel="nofollow">Disasters come in all forms</a>)

Food Bank-- the Food Bank of Alaska provides the basis for rural food banks (often only held monthly).

Another possibility might be the Catholic Social Services. The Catholic Church is the local church for some of the middle Yukon Villages in the Census Area. Some of these Villages, such as the GASH region (includes villages of Grayling, Anvik, Shageluk, and Holy Cross), are always hurting (an interesting note here, http://akbrownie.blogspot.com/2008/06/g-s-h-travels.html).

There is a Boys & Girls Club in Emmonak (Dora Moore works there). I'm not sure about the other Villages.

I'll see what else I can find and let everyone know.
